P Dope, a rapper, songwriter, and the founder of 5203 Records, isn’t just making music; he’s utilizing new technologies to excel his career and push his music forward.
We recently sat down with the Baltimore native to discuss his journey from a ten-year-old finding his voice to signing a distribution deal with Roc Nation Distribution in 2024.
The Voice of the Rough North Side
For P Dope, music was never a hobby, it was a necessity. Growing up in a rough area of Baltimore, he found that while he might not have been the star athlete on the court, he was a powerhouse behind the microphone.
“I started at ten years old,” he reflects. “It was a way to express myself. Musically, I knew I could shine. It gave me a way to say the things I couldn’t say elsewhere.”
That early need for expression has evolved into his signature sound: Lyrical hip-hop over old-school beats with a distinct bass and snare sound.
Quality Without Compromise
In an era of viral “mumble rap”, P Dope remains a purist regarding content. “I focus heavily on making sure I’m actually saying something,” he says.
As the founder of an independent label, he balances the creative side with the harsh realities of the music business. To bridge the gap between “indie budget” and “major label sound,” he turned to Masterchannel as his mastering service.
“We have an independent label, and Masterchannel offers the possibility to get a great product without breaking the bank,” he explains. Since being introduced to AI technology through online creator communities, he has integrated AI mastering into his official release workflow.
The Roc Nation Era and the Tech-Forward Artist
2024 marked a turning point for P Dope and 5203 Records with their distribution agreement through the Roc Nation network. With higher stakes comes the need for a faster, more efficient workflow.
“What really caught my attention about Masterchannel is how easy it is to use,” says Dope Boy P. “The turnaround time is fast, which is vital given how expedited the release process is these days.”
But he doesn’t just use AI for the sake of speed; he uses it as a strategic tool. As a business owner, he uses Masterchannel to:
- Experiment: Testing different mastering approaches to see what fits the track.
- Compare: Running AI masters alongside traditional engineer masters to make data-informed decisions on EQ and loudness.
- Scale: Handling digital exports and releases with clarity and efficiency.
“While I still work with traditional engineers for physical album exports, I’ve chosen Masterchannel for digital exports because of the clarity,” he notes. “As an indie artist navigating business decisions, having an inexpensive option that doesn’t require a long-term commitment is a game changer.”
What’s Next?
P Dope represents the new breed of artist-entrepreneur: one foot in the golden era of lyricism and the other in the future of music technology. With the backing of Roc Nation Distribution and a sharp eye on the technical quality of his craft, the voice that started in Baltimore at ten years old is now ready for the global stage.
